Color in Motion
I paint at night because I'm trying to draw some of the darkness into my work, preventing it from being just another pretty picture. So often the watercolor is associated with the white and pastels of the Impressionists. I create a unique effect by choosing a dark palette and often begin by first painting the entire background black. I create a hard edge using a variety of techniques including: masking tape, stencils and templates. A sense of motion is created by diagonal lines representing wind or light. My favorite complement is "it doesn't look like a watercolor."
Steve Haskin began painting in 1996 under the guidance of Maria Skutan Netz through the University of Minnesota's Compleat Scholar Program. His work has been seen at the Blue Moon Cafe, The Prairie Star, and Eden Prairie City Center.
Steve is also a guitarist and composer of two CD's: "Boundary Waters" and "Mississippi Goin' By". He has taught on the music faculty at Minneapolis Community and Technical College for over twenty years and has recently completed a Master of Fine Arts in creative writing at Hamline University.
